Fasting before a blood test: what you need to know
10 June 2026 3 min read
Some blood tests are more accurate when you haven't eaten. Here's a simple guide, but always follow the specific advice we give you.
Tests that usually need fasting
- Fasting blood sugar — typically 8–10 hours.
- Lipid profile (cholesterol) — often 9–12 hours.
- Some liver and kidney panels — as advised.
Can I drink water?
Yes — plain water is encouraged and actually makes it easier to draw blood. Avoid tea, coffee, juice and food during your fasting window.
Tips for an easy test
- Book a morning slot so you fast overnight while you sleep.
- Take regular medicines only if your doctor says it's okay.
- Ask about home sample collection if travelling while fasting is difficult.
