How to prepare for an abdominal ultrasound
2 May 2026 3 min read
An abdominal ultrasound looks at organs like the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. Good preparation helps your radiologist get the clearest possible images.
Fast before your scan
For most upper-abdomen scans, you'll be asked to fast for 6–8 hours. An empty stomach and gallbladder give a much clearer view. Plain water is usually fine — but follow the specific instructions we give you when you book.
What to wear and bring
- Loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to your abdomen.
- Any previous scans, prescriptions or reports for comparison.
- Your doctor's referral, if you have one.
During the scan
The scan is painless. A technician applies a warm gel and moves a probe over your skin. It usually takes 15–25 minutes, and most reports are ready the same day.
